Jaffna Fishermen Lament Of Poor Fish Harvest

A fisheries society in the North complains that the encroaching of Indian fishermen into Sri Lankan waters has affected the fish harvest of the local fishermen.

The United Fisheries Society inJaffnasays that although the local fishermen are now free to engage in fishing without any restrictions, they are faced with a problem due to the decline in their fish harvest.

The fishermen have said the number of Indian fishermen who poached in Sri Lankan waters have increased from about 1,000 to around 3,000.

According to them, the authorities are aware of the situation and called on the government to take the necessary steps to solve this problem.

The fishermen lament that the Jaffna fishermen used small boats and less number of fishing nets in comparison to the Indian trawlers.

Indian fishing boats according to the Jaffna fisheries society were frequently observed on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays of the week.
