The Parliamentary Council is to meet this week to appoint the new Attorney General.
The term of Attorney General Mohan Peiris ended on August 30th.
Solicitor General Eva Wanasundare is tipped to be appointed as the next Attorney General by the Parliamentary Council.
Government sources have been quoted in the media as saying the Parliamentary Council would meet on Friday (9) to make the appointment.
The 18th Amendment to the Constitution has mandated the Parliamentary Council to make key appointments. The Council includes Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa, Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne, Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe, UPFA parliamentarian A.H.M. Azwer and UNP parliamentarian D.M. Swaminathan.
Wickremesinghe and Swaminathan however, do not attend the Council meetings since their party opposes the 18th Amendment in principle.
