Top marketing professional Deepal Sooriyaarachchi has launched two of his latest books in the famous “Sinhalen Business” series.
Copies of the new publications “Sathiyen Dawasak” and “Rekiyawai Obai” were presented to the director of PIM Professor Uditha Liyanage.
Deepal commenced the series in year 2000 and there are nine books. Sathiyen Dawasak – is on how mindfulness can be developed and applied as an executive capability. Rekiyawai Obai – is a handy guide to succeed in a job with a range of practical tips to employees. The book also serves as a useful training tool for managers.
In Sathiyen Dawasak; Deepal attempts to distinguish between Reaction and Response. The latter he defines as an action done after becoming aware of the stimuli. While this is a capability that is available with everyone, some develop it as they mature in life. However it is important to develop this ability as a skill to be effective in the demanding business world of today. Therefore this should be developed like any other skill, argues Deepal in his book. He invites the reader to try many simple techniques to develop this skill and shares his insights applicable in the day to day business life.
It is a very interesting interpretation and application of Buddhist teachings in the world of business and commerce. He has done with such ease avoiding the religious branding by keeping to the essence of teaching.
Rekiyawai obai- (your job and you) is in a way a reflection of how he himself rose in the career ladder having started as a sales clerk at Moosajees. He shares his experiences and insights lavishly for the benefit of the reader. He also presents very important aspects relevant to employment that are normally not highlighted using very simple convincing examples. Some topics such as “You are a cost unless you add value,” “ Leave is a privilege not a right,” “ It is the customer who can guarantee the job, provide the salary and bonus,” “ Be loyal to the place you work until your last day of work,” are examples in this regard. Deepal also introduces his definition of professionalism at work using six Ps (i.e.) Pre planning, Paying attention to details, Proper records, Process approach, Performance – excellent, and Personal growth. It is interesting how he has presented the formula for failure, with which many of us can be identified easily.
The content of the book can be an ideal basis to conduct induction programmes in companies, for new employees. Written in very simple Sinhala with a lot of day to day examples interspersed with summary points make these books handy guides to find one’s way around in the busy corporate world of today. He uses his witty advertising like headlines and razor sharp insights in a compelling way. Short chapters of few pages make reading very easy.
