Labor Minister Gamini Lokuge says the government is committed to providing greater protection to workers and that more amendments would be introduced to existing labor laws to fulfill the workers’ needs.
Parliament yesterday unanimously passed Industrial Dispute (Amendment) Bill, which has increased the fine an employer has to pay in the event he is found guilty in an industrial dispute from Rs. 20,000 to Rs 100,000.
Lokuge has said the amendments would provide redress to workers in an industrial dispute.
He has added that the current labor laws in the country have not been amended since 1999 would be amended to fulfill the future needs of the working masses.
The main opposition UNP extended its support to pass the bill, but has called on the government to ensure its proper implementation.
