Parents of the North have accused Adela Balasingham for conscripting 5000 children to the LTTE and disappearing them.
The Northern parents claim that Adela, the wife of former LTTE theoretician Anton Balasingham, is directly responsible for conscripting children to the LTTE outfit. She had openly and blatantly flouted the orders issued by the then United Nations representative Olara Otunnu. It is reported that Adela Balasingham had given orders to continuously recruit child soldiers to strengthen the LTTE to battle against the Sri Lankan troops. In addition she had been responsible for the production and supply of cyanide capsules for the LTTE Children’s Brigade which comprised children of between eight and 15 years.
The media had given publicity to photographs which depict Adela tying cyanide capsules on to the necks of the the conscripted children. The Northerners said that LTTE had deployed about 5000 children under 18 years of age for the war. Many organizations in the North had already taken legal initiatives against Adela Balasingham.
