Standard Chartered Bank’s International Graduate Programme has highlighted Sri Lankan talent throughout the years across its global network. The latest batch (the International Graduates of 2009) has succeeded in securing postings overseas, and the four IGs, were felicitated last week for successfully completing the two year programme. They have secured postings in Singapore (two), Mumbai (one) and Sri Lanka (one). The new batch of five IGs was welcomed during the same ceremony. Standard Chartered Sri Lanka launched the IG programme in 2005, with 12 IGs graduating to date. The Bank has recruited a total of 25 IGs to date with graduations taking place each year. The five new IGs are currently in Malaysia attending the induction programme marking the beginning of a challenging new journey.
Aimed at developing tomorrow’s leaders, the Standard Chartered International Graduate Programme is a fast-paced, challenging programme that sets individuals on the pathway to a highly successful career in banking. All IGs are given the opportunity to work in international teams and collaborate across borders. Depending on the chosen stream, exceptional performers have the opportunity to work overseas during the programme.
Each year, the journey of the new batch begins with the International Induction Programme in Kuala Lumpur for all International Graduates across the Standard Chartered network. This affords the new recruits the opportunity to meet and interact with other graduates, to develop a professional network that spans the globe, and to interact with senior leaders and get to know Standard Chartered Bank’s businesses, strategy and its role in the communities.
Globally, around 300 Graduates are recruited each year, from over 90,000 applications received. Given the nature and exclusivity of the programme, the selection process is extremely stringent with candidates having to apply online and succeed at several screening tests prior to being called for their first interview. For the Consumer Banking IG Programme, candidates are required to have a Masters degree; for the Wholesale Banking programme they must be fluent in at least two languages (including English).
A comprehensive development plan is implemented for the duration of the programme. This includes on-the-job rotations which give Graduates the opportunity to work in various areas of the chosen business function and obtain hands-on experience, and off-the-job development such as Academic Programmes held overseas in countries such as Malaysia, Singapore and China which provide the Graduates with in-depth banking knowledge. The Bank also sponsors further qualifications such as CFA for the Wholesale Banking Graduates. Global standards are developed and consistently adhered to in order to ensure that all Graduates across the Bank’s network receive the same experience regardless of which country they come from.
Post completion of the programme, Graduates apply for permanent roles at management grades through a global “job pool” – the Bank strongly encourages cross-border moves, and many top-performing Graduates gain permanent roles overseas.
