Minister Basil Rajapaksa has said in Vavuniya that strength will be injected to the Northerners to live on their own without being a burden to others.
The Minister called on all government officials concerned to use the funds purely for the benefit of the civilians. He also called on the recipients to make optimum use of their lands and to rise up with self-strength without being a burden to others.
The Government has mooted an accelerated programme to upgrade the lives of the civilians who had been resettled in the North. In parallel to this programme assistance was handed over to 250 selected families from Vavuniya. The distribution took place at the Vavuniya Cultural Centre. Minister Basil Rajapaksa was the Chief Guest. Financial assistance is being provided for this programme by the Japanese Financial Fund to Minimize Poverty. 2500 persons from Vavuniya have been selected under this Scheme. Each person should contribute their labour for development activities in the area for 22 days. They are being provided 600 rupees per day for six months. The allocation made by the Japanese Government for this effort is 260 million rupees.
