A group of people apparently engaged in dog fighting scattered when deputies interrupted a fight Thursday night, but one man was arrested and several dogs recovered.
Richland County Sheriff’s deputies called to the location by a resident’s complaint about barking dogs came upon a dog fight under way around 7:45 p.m. on the 600 block of Camp Ground Road. Operators and participants scattered when the deputies were spotted, so the department helicopter and canine teams were brought to the scene, the department said.
One man, Stanley William Taylor Jr., 23, was arrested and charged with two counts of violating the Animal Fighting or Baiting Act. He is currently being held at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
Some of the approximately 33 dogs, described as pit bulls, were recovered, but it was not clear exactly how many.
The department continues to investigate the operation.
