Deputy Minister Rohitha Abeygunawardena claims that it had already been proved that any large vessel in the world had the capability of entering the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Harbour in Hambantota.
The Minister said that a large vessel which can enter any Harbour in the world has now reached the Hambantota Harbour. The approach route is 240 metres wide. The access route to the sea spread one kilometer and is 17 metres deep. He pointed out that any big ship that has been built in the world or is to be built in another 20 years can approach the Hambantota Harbour without encountering any encumbrances.
The Minister was speaking after an inspection tour of the Harbour premises. A vessel from Singapore reached the Harbour today. More are due to follow suit. The Deputy Minister instructed the officials concerned to expedite the other constructions at the precincts.
