The Water Supply, Construction, Lands and Resettlement Ministries have forwarded proposals to meet the aspirations of the people from the budget.
A round of talks was held at Temple Trees today to solicit views and proposals of many Ministries for the crafting of the 2012 Budget.
The Ministries of Water Supply and Drainage, Construction Engineering Services Housing and Public Amenities, Disaster Management, Lands and Land Development and Resettlement forwarded views and proposals to President Rajapaksa. At this meeting, officials pointed out that a major expenditure was incurred on behalf of water purification and distribution than the bill handed over to the consumer. While implementing new projects for the supply of water, proposals were considered to minimize the wastage of water.
The attention of the President was drawn to the delay in the payment of compensation on behalf of land acquired for development. Discussions dealt at length on the rapid progress achieved in the construction sector and low cost housing schemes. The President emphasized the need to educate school children to minimize damage caused as a result of disasters such as lightening. Future programmes concerning disaster management also came up for discussion. The meeting took note of the progress achieved in the resettlement programme and its future activities. Ministers of the relevant portfolios and senior Government Officials were present.
