Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe says a body of legal experts acceptable to both the government the opposition should be consulted on parliamentary matters instead of the Attorney General.
Wickremesinghe has told parliament that the Attorney General is being consulted on parliamentary matters based on the 18th Amendment, which was passed in an arbitrary manner.
He has noted that parliament could also consult the Commonwealth Parliamentarians’ Association if the necessity arose.
He has added that sinceSri Lankais a member of the organization and Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa is the head of the body, there would not be a problem in such a move.
According to Wickremesinghe, the 18th Amendment was passed in parliament in violation of parliamentary Standing Orders.
