Offering degrees by the private universities is not a political act.
Minister S.B. Dissanayake said that it is being done on a decision made by the University Grants Commission. The Minister said that if any institution requests powers to grant a degree, the request is forwarded to the University Grants Commission. Accordingly the UGC has instructed him to issue the gazette notification bestowing those powers. He said that the policy of the government is to provide opportunities for private universities to function and thereby enhance free education. The Minister expressed these views at the annual workshop of the Committee of Vice Chancellors and Directors held at Katunayake. Chancellors, Vice Chancellors, Deans and other senior officials of all universities participated in the occasion.
