The UNP has expressed doubts over what it claims as an urgent need by the Higher Education Ministry to provide legal recognition to private medical college in Malabe with affiliations to a Russian state university.
UNP parliamentarian Ravi Karunanayake has said the move by the Higher Education Ministry could have been prompted by a “suspicious” bi-lateral agreement between the Russian and Sri Lankan governments.
Karunanayake has observed that the gazette notification by the Ministry legalizing the medical degree awarded by the South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM) could be part of a secret move by the government to ensure strong ties between theSri Lanka and Russia, which was not known to the people.
He has questioned the government’s urgency in establishing yet another private institution.
These are the facts that give rise to fears and these have to be looked at, Karunanayake has said.
