Forty persons have been arrested while attempting to flee to Australia.
They had left for Australia from Negombo this morning. Naval spokesman Commander Kosala Warnakulasuriya said that 40 persons were who were illegally migrating to Australia were arrested this morning at sea off Kalmunai. He said that there was one woman and two children amongst them. He said that they would have met with disaster due to the rough seas if they were not arrested by the Navy. They will be brought to the Trincomalee harbour and handed over to the Police for further investigation. He said that the Navy is maintaining high alert round the coastal belt and will carry out such operations in the future as well.
