The Government Nursing Officers Association (GNOA) is to protest on Wednesday (14) against the recruitment of commerce and arts students as nurses.
The GNOA protest on the 14th will be held outside the National Hospital in Colombo against the health authority’s decision to recruit persons who had passed the GCE Advanced Level examination in commerce and art as nurses.
The Association has stated that the decision has affected the level of educational qualifications required to become a nurse.
According to the GNOA, the Nurses’ Constitution that came into effect in November 2010 clearly stated that Z scores in biology, math, and agriculture at the A/Levels were considered when recruiting nurses.
The Association notes that the new method of recruitment would prevent patients from receiving treatment from competent nursing staff while professional standards would also be compromised.
