The Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) has called on the Health Ministry to immediately appoint directors to six key state hospitals and to fill other vacancies in the health sector.
The six hospitals where vacancies for the post of director exist are the National Hospital, Lady Ridgeway Children’s’ Hospital, Castle Street Hospital for Women, Maternity Hospital in Mahamodera, Karapitiya General Hospital and the Badulla General Hospital, the GMOA has stated.
Chief Secretary of the GMOA Dr. Dhammika Pathirana has said there were many vacancies that needed to be filled at the state hospitals.
According to him, there are currently about 40 posts for Senior Medical Officers (SMOs), over 100 posts for Junior Medical Officers (JMOs) that remain vacant.
There are also more vacancies for medical officers in the Provincial Health Services.
Dr. Pathirana has noted that all these vacancies needed to be filled in order to provide a better health service to the people.
He has said the Health Ministry has so far failed to make the appointments.
