TS Maria should stay clear of S.C. coast

Tropical Storm Maria is following the 2011 trend, curving north well before it reaches South Carolina.
But the storm is expected to push up larger than normal waves on South Carolina beaches and bring a risk of rip currents through Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.
Maria is expected to pass about 700 miles east of the state early Thursday. Surfers can expect waves to top out in the 4-foot range. Fortunately for erosional beaches in the state, this month's full-moon high tides occurred in the gap between swells from storms Katia and Maria. Joey Holleman
