Sri Lanka’s first female Attorney General Shanthi Eva Wanasundera assumes office.
She took oaths before President Rajapaksa today. Solicitor General Shanthi Eva Wanasundara PC was sworn in as the new Attorney General following approval by Parliament last Friday. Mrs. Wanasundara assumes office as the 26th Attorney General in the country and marks a milestone in the history of the Attorney Generals Department that spans over a century.
Mrs. Wanasundara, a graduate of University of Leicester Law School, is a past pupil of Dharmapala College Pannipitiya.
Mrs. Wanasundera joined the Attorney General’s Department in 1979 as a State Counsel and subsequently served as Senior State Counsel, Deputy Solicitor General, Additional Solicitor General and Solicitor General before her appointment as the Attorney General.
She was also the first woman Senior State Counsel, first woman Deputy Solicitor General, first woman Additional Solicitor General and the first woman Solicitor General. She assumed duties amidst the warm greetings of the staff of the Attorney Generals Department.
