Sewer spills into river near Riverbanks Zoo

A sewer line blockage near Greystone Boulevard allowed sewage to flow into a storm drain that led to the Saluda River Monday.
Someone walking along the river noticed the smell Monday morning, and Congaree Riverkeeper Stuart Greeter said he was contacted around noon. He quickly checked out the spill and called the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control.
Columbia utility workers had posted sewage spill warning signs on Candi Lane and were working to divert the spill by 3:15 p.m. A city news release on the spill didn't reveal the size of the spill, which was blamed on a blockage in the sewage collection system.
The sewage was coming out of the drain pipe just upstream from the Millrace Rapids area near Riverbanks Zoo, Greeter said. Joey Holleman
