Union County officials are considering allowing non-violent inmates to be released from jail if they pay for electronic monitoring.
WSPA-TV in Spartanburg reported ( http://bit.ly/piZUUO) Sheriff David Taylor says the idea would help with jail crowding.
Union County's jail is designed to hold 40 inmates. Taylor says it has contained 60 or more inmates on most days. He says it costs the county about $52 per day for each inmate.
Taylor says the program would not be offered to inmates accused of violent crimes.
Union County Council would have to approve the program before it could be implemented.
