The Government has emphatically mentioned that the low income group was not evicted from Kompannaveediya. Addressing the media at the Information Department, the Minister responded to allegations made by the United National Party that these dwellers had been evicted from Colombo. He said that the UNP in their election campaign was saying that city dwellers would be evicted and located outside. He queried from the journalists whether they could be evicted and thrown into the streets without providing a house. The Government had no intention of doing so. The UNP is using this for their poll campaign. The dwellers of Kompannaveediya will be provided with flats equipped with all basic facilities. The children are not admitted to schools whether they live opposite Royal College or Visaka Vidyalaya when they mention the location of their residence. The distance whether it is 50 or 100 metres is not considered in school admission. The Government is not prepared to inherit this to the children of these children.
He commented that that there are hells as well as heavens in the City. The Minister pointed out that the intention of the Government was to provide better living conditions to all slum dwellers. It was for this reason that it was asking for the vote of the people, to eliminate hells prevailing in the city under its development programme.
