Today is World Ozone Day. The International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer is being commemorated on the 16th of September, since 1995. The global theme for Ozone Day 2011 is ‘HCFC Phase-out: a Unique Opportunity’.
The Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer and its Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer are dedicated to the protection of the earth’s ozone layer. With 196 parties, they are the most widely ratified treaties in United Nations history. All member nations of the Montreal protocol seize this opportunity to take some concrete steps at their national level in accordance with the aims and objectives of Montreal protocol.
The National ceremony marking World Ozone Day was held at Debarawewa in Tissamaharama under the auspices of Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa. The Minister also declared open an Art Exhibition of school children. Among those present were heads of many institutions affiliated to the environmental sector.
