The Richland County Sheriff’s Department is taking care of pit bulls seized last week during a dog-fighting raid in the Campground Road area north of Columbia.
The sheriff’s department says a magistrate revoked custody of the dogs from their owners during a hearing this week. The department says the investigation of dog-fighting is continuing.
“The main priorities of the investigation are the well-being of the animals and the prosecution of those responsible,’’ the sheriff’s department said in a news release.
Richland County deputies raided a dog fight in progress Sept. 8 and arrested one suspect. Others at the fight scattered. Dogs used in the fight have been rounded up by the department which said last week it had taken in about 24 dogs.
Sheriff Leon Lott has described the dog-fighting operation as a large one and there likely will be more arrests. The Campground Road area is off U.S. 321 in northern Richland County in an area where there have been past incidents of dog-fighting and drug-dealing.
