University students protest against the government’s decision to hand over the security of state universities to a security firm owned by the government.
Students of theRuhunaUniversityhave protested against the deployment of security personnel from the government owned Rakna Lanka to provide security to the state universities.
Head of the Ruhuna University, Agriculture Faculty, Amila Prasad has said the move is aimed at cracking down on university students since the security firm consists of former military personnel.
He has said it also proved that the government wanted to suppress public dissent.
According to Prasad, the deployment of personnel from Rakna Lanka to provide security to universities would result in the transformation of universities in to mini battle fields.
Members of the security company would not be protecting the students, but policing them, Prasad has added.
He has noted that state universities in other parts of the island would also commence protests against the government’s move.
