US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Robert Blake was not accorded a welcome at the entrance of the Jaffna District Secretariat when he visited the premises last week.
The visit to the Jaffna District Secretariat was part of Blake’s schedule last week while in Sri Lanka. However despite knowing in advance that he was visiting the Jaffna District Secretariat for talks with officials no one was present at the entrance to welcome him. The Uthayan newspaper which is published in Jaffna published pictures of Blake making his way through the entrance of the Secretariat accompanied only by his delegation.
A demonstration was also staged in Jaffna during Blake’s visit forcing him to put-off at least one of his scheduled meetings.
When contacted by The Sunday Leader the US Embassy in Colombo remained silent on the snubbing given to Blake. When asked by The Sunday Leader if the US Embassy had lodged a complaint over some of the incidents which took place in Jaffna at the time of Blake’s visit, the US Embassy in Colombo said it could not comment.
