A special committee has been set up to investigate into the train crash in Alawwa.
The Transport Minister has said that strict action will be taken against the culprits. The loss suffered due to the accident exceeds 75 million rupees. Three trains crashed at the Alawwa Railway Station at about 5.00pm yesterday. Three persons were killed and another 35 were injured. A train driver, an assistant and a French national were among the dead. The injured are being treated at the Alawwa and Kurunegala Teaching hospitals. Other patients have left the hospital after receiving treatment. A power set that came from behind has hit an intercity express train that was towing another damaged train along the track. The observation car of the express train has suffered heavy damage. Strenuous efforts had to be made to take out the passengers who were stuck in the damaged train. The special committee will conduct inquiries. After visiting the accident site Minister Kumara Welgama said that strict action will be taken against the culprits according to the content of the report.
The Minister also visited the injured in the hospital. The Railway Control Room said that the rail track has been renovated in Alawwa and normal train services have resumed.
