Williamsburg County residents are worried about a proposal to build a private landfill that would handle 400,000 tons of garbage each year.
The Post and Courier of Charleston reported Monday ( http://bit.ly/nRmyro) that the county is supposed to submit the proposed site for the landfill to the Department of Health and Environmental Control by Sept. 27.
Officials have not released the location, calling it a contractual matter.
Beth Tisdale of Kingstree says it's been hard to get information on the project.
A group of opponents has sued, accusing DHEC of changing Williamsburg County's permit from 35,000 tons to 400,000 tons of solid waste per year without giving public notice. The lawsuit also states there is no need for the landfill.
