The UPFA says the forthcoming local government elections next month would be the first election to be held following the withdrawal of emergency regulations.
UPFA General Secretary and Minister Susil Premajayanth told a press conference that following the withdrawal of emergency regulations, all political parties have been able to engage in carrying out their election campaigns freely.
He added that no major incidents of violence have been reported in the campaign period.
Referring to the elections for the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC), Premajayanth noted that the Council had to be given prominence since Colombo is the key city in the country.
According to him, no other political party could administer the CMC while being detached from the government.
