The Paddy Marketing Board says that its programme to purchase paddy is being successfully implemented throughout the country. Its Chairman K.B. Jayasinghe said they had already purchased more than 64,000 metric tons of paddy. The Paddy Marketing Board Chairman said the highest quantity of paddy purchased so far was from Polonnaruwa. It was 25,000 metric tons. Purchases made from Ampara totaled 13,000, Anuradhapura 7,000, Hambantota 5,000, Kilinochchi 300, Trincomalee 3,000 and Batticaloa 1,000. He revealed that 2,000 metric tons each was purchased from Kurunegala and Puttalam Districts. He said that altogether the quantity purchased so far was 60,136 and the expenditure incurred was 1.7 Billion Rupees. Mr. Jayasinghe pointed out that a kilo of Samba paddy was purchased at 30 rupees and the Nadu variety at 28 rupees. He revealed that purchases were made at 143 storage facilities of these districts.
