Docs want committee on private med college

Sep 19, 2011 3:14:16 PM - www.ft.lk

Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) has charged that the Minister of Health Maithripala Sirisena has not appointed the promised committee to look into the standards of the private medical college in Malabe.
The Vice Secretary of the GMOA Upul Gunasekara points out that the Ministry had not formally informed the private medical college to suspend new admissions until the report of the committee is out, as promised by the Minister.

The GMOA was to launch a token strike against the controversial medical faculty of the South Asia Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM), known as the Malabe private medical college on 7 September but temporarily suspended the action based on the promises of the Minister of Health to appoint a committee to probe the standards of the college.
During a discussion held with the GMOA on 6 September, the Minister also promised to order the private medical college not to admit further students until the report of the committee is considered by the Ministry.
