S.M.H.Deen of Kurunegala, a Samurdhi Officer is prepared to serve as the hangman. The position has been vacant for several years. The service of the hangman came to an end in 1978, as the capital punishment was not enforced although criminals were sentenced to death, although the salary was paid on behalf of this position. The hangman at Welikada thereafter received a promotion while the hangman at Bogambara went on retirement. Since then applications were called from time to time to fill the vacancy. However, the vacancy continued to exist. Appeals continued to pour in recently from every hook and corner for the re-enforcement of capital punishment. 80 percent favoured the implementation of the death penalty.
S.M.H. Deen, a Samurdhi Officer from Kurunegala had personally come forward to accept the position.
