Land and Land Development Minister Janaka Bandara Tennekoon says a proper discussion should have been held before the introduction of a law calling for fruits and vegetables to be transported in plastic crates.
Tennekoon has said the government had made the decision in a hurry without considering properly the impact on farmers.
Tennekoon during a meeting with several farmer organizations has said the decision had inconvenienced the farmers.
The farmers have lamented that the transportation cost of food crops have incased following the introduction of the law to transport fruits and vegetables in plastic crates.
According to Tennekoon, the new transportation methods have discouraged farmers.
