The contributions made by Sri Lanka for the promotion of global unity have earned praise in the United States.
President Rajapaksa, who participated in the Clinton Global Initiative 2011 Annual Meeting in New York, was warmly welcomed by former US President Bill Clinton, who appreciated Sri Lanka’s contributions. Mr. Clinton thanked the President for these magnanimous gestures. In his address to the meeting, Mr. Clinton dealt at length on the problems encountered by the global community due to the economic crises and global climatic changes. He said collective global efforts were vital if these challenges were to be surmounted.
US President Barack Obama, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina and South African President Jacob Zuma were among state leaders who inaugural sessions of the meeting, in addition to leading businessmen in the world and Heads of Welfare Organisations and Multinational Companies.
