For nine years, a Spartanburg man near retirement faithfully played the same five numbers in the South Carolina Education Lottery’s Palmetto Cash 5 game.
Last Wednesday, he got his big payday and might be just a little closer to retirement.
The winner, who has withheld his name, told lottery officials he always played 6, 13, 16, 31 and 36. Nine years in, and two years from retirement, he sat and watched with his wife as those numbers were called.
“I took a deep breath,” he said. “Then I started freaking out.”
The numbers alone netted $100,000, quadrupled with the “Power-Up” multiplier of 4. The man purchased his ticket at a Spartanburg Publix supermarket, which got a $4,000 retailer commission.
