The 66th UN General Assembly has got underway.
It was inaugurated at the UN headquarters in New York. Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa also participated in the inaugural session.
Addressing the session UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon said that the climatic changes have created a serious threat to the human kind. He pointed out the importance of facing the problem collectively.
Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff became the first female leader to deliver the inaugural address of the annual debate.
Addressing the session US President Barack Obama said that peace cannot be achieved solely through the conventions and drafts passed at the UN.
Ministers Prof. G.L. Peiris, Anura Priyadarshana Yapa, Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunge, Chief of the Presidential staff Gamini Senarath and permanent Sri Lankan representative to the UN Dr. Palitha Kohona also participated in the inaugural session.
