A one-time Fairfield County Sheriff’s deputy has been arrested and is under investigation for misconduct in office and breach of trust.
The South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division arrested Brandon Devaul Belton, 24, of Ridgeway, Wednesday following an investigation, the agency said.
The investigation was requested by the Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office.
According to a warrant affadavit, Belton was fired Sept. 9 after three years with the sheriff’s office after reporting his department-issued fully automatic M-4 rifle, its magazines and ammunition, a Remington 870 shogun and a duffle bag full of biohazard equipment were stolen. The items were valued at $2,550.
In subsequent internal and SLED interviews, Belton offered differing versions of how his equipment came to be missing, according to the affadavit, including that a drug dealer stole them, that they might be in his girlfriend’s car, in a different patrol car or stolen from his personal vehicle.
