The Paddy Marketing Board has achieved the expected targets in purchasing paddy in the Yala season. So far 53,981 metric tons of paddy have been purchased.
The Paddy marketing Board implemented a special programme to purchase paddy in the Yala season. The PMB said that accordingly it had planned to purchase nearly 75,000 metric tons of paddy during the Yala season. By last week The PMB had bought 53,981 metric tons of paddy achieving the targets.
The purchasing was carried out by dividing the paddy producing areas into 4 zones. The Chairman of the Paddy marketing Board K.B. Jayasinghe has said that the largest stocks have been purchased in the Polonnaruwa zone.
Hundred and eighty five thousand metric tons of paddy purchased during the past seasons are stored in the storehouses of the PMB. These stocks will be milled and issued to the market in the future. This helps to maintain a stable price. The Paddy Marketing Board said that paddy is continuously being purchased.
