President Rajapaksa has recalled the significant services discharged by veteran and popular actor Joe Abeywickrema to bring the Sri Lankan cinema to the international arena. The President made this recollection issuing a message from New York.
The President said Joe Abeywickrama’s service for the development of the local cinema will be remembered by the nation with gratitude. In his condolence message he said he was attending the UN General Assembly and was in a position to pay his last respect to this great artiste.
The President pointed out that Abeywickrama was an exemplary actor who grave pride of place for Sri Lankan traditional culture. Abeywickrama was acclaimed as the best character actor by Sri Lankans. His services should be remembered with gratitude. The President in his message further said that the loss of a star like Abeywickrama is an irreparable loss to the Sri Lankan cinema industry. He extended his and the Government’s condolences to the bereaved family.
