People in Columbia are accustomed to planning their fall weekends around USC home football games.
This year, however, the maneuvering had to go up a notch. Four consecutive Saturday home games – an occurrence for the first time since 2000 – have prompted changes in festivals, fundraisers and work schedules across the Midlands this fall.
Riverbanks Zoo and Garden, for example, tries to schedule its annual Zoofari
fundraiser on a late September or early October Saturday night, when the Gamecocks aren’t playing or are on the road.
This year, however, zoo officials noticed USC was playing at Williams-Brice Stadium all of those Saturdays so they dropped back and punted. Zoofari will be on Friday, Sept. 30.
“Every other nonprofit in town looks at that schedule, too,” said Satch Krantz, executive director of the zoo. “Everybody schedules their event on a night not competing with the USC schedule. Then, we end up competing with each other on the Saturdays they’re out of town.”
