A petition filed by the UNP, challenging the appointments of Parliamentarians Manusha Nanayakkara and Gayantha Karunatilake to Parliament representing the Galle District, has been rejected.

Giving his views on the verdict delivered by the Court of Appeal, Galle District Parliamentarian Manusha Nanayakkara said that a defeated candidate at the 2010 parliamentary polls had challenged his and Gayantha Karunatilake’s victory to meet the aspirations of other groups within the UNP. However, the Appeals Court gave a ruling defeating all challenges and endorsing the people’s mandate quashing their petition and safeguarding their seats.

The petition was forwarded by Krishantha Pushpakumara who contested for the Galle district from the same party. He had requested for a recount of votes but it was rejected stating that it was filed in violation of provisions of the election law.
