Govt. Admits To Increase In Liquor Licenses

Sep 24, 2011 4:26:14 AM - thesundayleader.lk

The government says the number of liquor licenses issued in the country has increased last year in comparison to 2009.

The government has informed parliament that 51 liquor licenses had been issued last year as opposed to 36 in 2009.

The government had earned a Rs. 4.2 million revenue in 2010, which is an increase against Rs.2.3 million earned in 2009.

The increase in the issuance of liquor licenses has taken place despite a government campaign “Mathata Thitha” aimed at reducing alcohol consumption in the country.

The government response tabled in parliament to a question posed by UNP parliamentarian Ravi Karunanayake has stated that the liquor licenses had been issued to hotels approved by Sri Lanka Tourist Board.

Six licenses had been issued in Colombo, another six in Gampaha, four in Galle, three in Anuradhapura, five in Kalutara and another three in Puttalam.

Six licenses had also been issued in Jaffna, one in Kilinochchi and another in Trincomalee.
