Sep 25, 2011 10:36:10 AM - itnnews.lk

The best investment that can be made for shanty dwellers in Colombo is to build them comfortable homes.

Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa stated that the government has a clear programme in this connection. The Defence Secretary called on the people not to be duped by false propaganda. He said that people will not be moved to different locations. He called on them to convey this information to their friends and family members. He said that a change has to be brought about in Colombo and the residents should support that programme.
He expressed these views while addressing a meeting held to raise awareness in the Colombo residents about the programme launched by the government to build new houses for shanty dwellers and development in Colombo. Six housing projects will be completed in the next three years for their benefit. The Defence Secretary pointed out that this would provide new houses for 30,000 families. A massive crowd had gathered for the meeting held at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium and a large number had to stay outside due lack of space. Parliamentarian Duminda Silva organized the meeting.
He said that that UNP that lacks a planned programme should not be brought into power at the Municipal Council. He stressed that the government will not risk the lives of hundreds of thousands of people in the Colombo District. The Municipal Council will have to fulfill all its duties.
Addressing the gathering Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa said that politics was not involved in the decision to develop Colombo and uplift the lives of the people. The people have to decide whether they want to walk backward or forward. The government is striving to make them powerful citizens while cleaning up the city.
