Two factions are striving to consolidate their power at the JVP Headquarters.
The JVP has split due to a conflict occurred regarding the party leadership. Internal sources say that two factions have been formed under the leadership of Somawansa Amarasinghe and Prem Kumar Gunaratnam respectively. The attempts made so far by the Somawansa Amarasinghe faction to settle the conflict and prevent it from leaking to the public has been futile. The JVP leaders intervened to stop the distribution of the Lanka paper and the media unit of the party was dissolved. Parliamentarian Vijitha Herath has been appointed the media spokesman although he has not been able to conceal the situation. The dissident group led by Gunaratnam attempted to obtain power at the headquarters after the tense discussions held at the party headquarters ended in a clash. Both factions are reported to be staying at the headquarters. Parliamentarian Lal Kantha has been handed over the responsibility of ousting the members of the Gunaratnam faction from the headquarters and to reconsolidate their power. A party activist told ITN that the action to scrap the meals and tea provided to the dissident group was taken on the instructions of Parliamentarian Lal Kantha. Although Somawansa faction has power in certain districts and Gunratnam faction has power in others it is considered important to consolidate power at the headquarters.
