Nine S.C. House members also drawing retirement pay

Sep 27, 2011 2:30:00 PM - thestate.com
Nine of the 124 members of the S.C. House of Representatives also are "retired" and being paid from a state pension plan that, many say, is superior to the plan for state retirees.

Nineteen state senators also are drawing retirement pay while they remain in the Legislature. In some cases, the legislators are drawing three times as much in annual pension pay as their $10,400 legislative salaries before retiring.

Meanwhile, lawmakers are considering cuts to the retirement plan that covers state retirees and its active employees to get its debt under control.

According to a list released Tuesday to The State newspaper, the House members drawing pensions are: Rep. Jimmy Bales, D-Richland; Rep. Liston Barfield, R-Horry; Rep. Grady Brown, D-Lee; Rep. Greg Delleney, R-Chester; Rep. Jerry Govan, D-Orangeburg

Rep. George Hearn, R-Horry; Rep. Lonnie Hosey, D-Barnwell; Rep. Denny Neilson, D-Darlington; and Rep. Roland Smith, R-Aiken.
