Current events came to life Tuesday morning for one class at Fairwold Pendergrass School, a polling place in North Columbia.
A classroom of older students at the school for mentally disabled students was studying Tuesday's edition of The State newspaper. As part of its current events discussion, the students and teacher were discussing the Columbia mayor's race when the teacher noticed candidate Steve Benjamin walk by her classroom. She asked Benjamin to come inside and meet her students.
The class got a chance to ask Benjamin questions. All of them were about Benjamin's favorite musical artists.
"Do you like Outkast?" one boy asked.
They also asked Benjamin about Tupac Shukar, 'Lil Wayne, Gucci Mane and Bird Man. Benjamin had never heard of Birdman, but he earned style points by playing a Solja Boy song on his iphone.
