A five-car chain-reaction wreck Saturday in Orangeburg County resulted in the death of a pickup truck driver and his 5-year-old passenger.
The S.C. Highway Patrol said the wreck began in the eastbound lanes of I-26 at the 142 mile marker around 10 p.m. Moments later, two people in a pickup were dead, seven people were injured and five vehicles were strewn across the scene.
According to highway patrol Lance Cpl. Josef Robinson:
A Nissan pickup truck driven by a 56-year-old Saint Matthews man struck an empty car trailer being towed by Lawrence Litman, 40, of Ridgeville. Litman and a passenger, Shahanda Williams, 38, of Pineville, were wearing seat belts and not injured.
Behind the pickup, Tasha McKnight, 28, of Hidden Valley Drive, Lexington, swerved her Nissan to avoid the pickup and struck the median cable barrier. She and her passenger, 5-year-old Timothy McKnight, were injured and taken to Orangeburg Regional Medical Center. Tasha McKnight was wearing her seat belt and the little boy was in a car seat.
