Mac Leitner was in his car near downtown Rock Hill when he got a phone call that prompted an abrupt turn toward Winthrop University.
Crossing the Oakland Avenue bridge a few blocks from campus, Leitner looked up in the sky and saw smoke. A fire Saturday afternoon set ablaze the roof of Owens Hall, the three-story, $6.5 million academic building that Leitner?s company built in 2007.
For Leitner, the moment brought a feeling of instant sickness.
?We?re all sick about it,? he said. ?It was the prettiest building on campus. It?s just a very stately building.?
On Monday, Leitner joined others befuddled by the origins of the fire, which burned in Owens Hall?s attic for nearly a full day, demanding attention from dozens of firefighters and the use of 1.2 million gallons of water.
