Stranded whale and dolphins no cause for alarm

Mar 8, 2010 9:49:00 PM - thestate.com
CHARLESTON - An expert says it's unusual to see a pygmy sperm whale and four dolphins stranded along the S.C. coast, but there is no cause for alarm.

The (Charleston) Post and Courier reports the strandings were far apart and not thought to be related.

The whale was found near Pawleys Island on the north coast Saturday. Earlier last week, two dolphins were found in the Charleston area and two others in Beaufort County on the south coast.

Wayne McFee of the National Ocean Service's marine mammal stranding program says the mammals strand year-round. He said experts are monitoring the situation, but it could just be that with warmer temperatures, people are out and seeing the animals on the beach.

Tests showed the whale had liver and heart trouble.
