A self-proclaimed preacher accused of scamming parishioners in Maine has been jailed along with his wife in a dispute over custody of her two girls, police said.
Colin Haag Jr. and Amanda Haag, who are charged with kidnapping and criminal restraint, came to the attention of police after the biological father of Amanda Haag's children showed up in Jonesport looking for the girls, who are ages 7 and 12.
The Haags had packed their bags and sent the girls into hiding at a hotel when police intervened Sunday, said Sgt. Timothy Tabbutt of the Washington County Sheriff's Department.
The girls, who were discovered alone in a hotel room an hour's drive away in Ellsworth, were reunited Sunday night with their father, Randall Hodges, of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Tabbutt said.
The Haags and the girls arrived in eastern Maine last August, and Colin Haag worked at three different Baptist churches in Columbia and Addison. But an investigation indicates Haag was not an ordained minister, and some parishioners have accused of him stealing money and property, Tabbutt said.
