A street in a Fort Jackson officer housing area was evacuated last week when some unexploded ordinance was discovered by construction workers, the base newspaper reported.
The Fort Jackson Leader said the workers found "well-buried" 1940s-era 75 mm rounds near Furman Smith Road and Knight Avenue. The rounds were blanks, but did include primer and some explosive powder, the newspaper said.
Explosive experts destroyed the rounds. The area now is being carefully searched for possible additional rounds.
